A cool breeze rustled the silk banners that hung in the great hall. Shinjo Yosama chose that moment to breathe inwardly sharp, and deep. Eyes closed, and sitting in a lotus position Yosama gazed upon a different audience chamber than the one sprawled before him currently. He saw himself as a young man, eyes eagerly watching him as he struggled to maintain his On while walking forward to bow before Shinjo Yokatsu, his Uncle, his Daimyo, his Champion. Today was the day he passed his gempukku, and was sworn into the Unicorn Clan. A day that he was no longer a boy, but had become a man. He could see his Uncle sitting on the high backed intricately carved throne adorned with the hide of a great lion. Its head peering down at his Uncle. Yosama inwardly chuckled when he remembered how nervous Lion Diplomats were when they came to present petitions to Yokatsu. The audience chamber afforded more comfort for its guest, and its ruler in this modern age. A sudden voice broke Yosama from his meditation.

"Yosama-dono, I am glad to have found you here. There are questions I wanted to ask you. First, what are you doing here?" Shinjo Min-Hee inquired.

"I knew your father well, Min-Hee-sama." Yosama replied, "We grew up, and trained together. He and I both walked this hall together to proclaim our vows."

"He spoke of you often, wondered why you just disappeared without a trace. You evade my question though, what brings you here?"

"I came to meditate, to speak with the spirits of our ancestors. The cool of the morning is a good time for such meditation. I like to receive guidance for the day, while the day is still young."

"Why here? There are temples, and shrines for such meditations."

"Here is where decisions were made, here is where my memories walk. Here is where my thoughts coalesce." Yosama bowed deeply to Min-Hee. "Now the sun rises, and the day awakens, may I be excused Min-Hee-sama?"

"One more question, why did you leave us?

"My mind, and soul were shattered by my loss to the devastation that was the Shadowlands assault upon our Empire. I was also shattered by personal loss."

"Do you think you were the only one who suffered?"

"No Min-Hee-sama, many suffered from loss during that time. Many may suffer again soon. The signs are all around us, we are too relaxed. The Great Enemy will strike again soon. That is why I had to return to repay the debt of honor I owed my family here."

"Yes, ofcourse." Shinjo Min-Hee seemed to both be listening, and far away at the same time.

"I lost a dear friend, a friend I knew well, had grown up with, fought beside. He was a life friend, a confident I could speak with about anything. I also lost my betrothed, my beloved, my heart was slain. I was only a shell of a man. My prayer Min-Hee is that you never feel that loss."

Shinjo Yosama left the audience chamber, and quietly walked along the hard wooden floors of Shiro Shinjo noticing every little addition, and change that had been made. Yes, it was a much more comfortable place now. Min-Hee smiled as he walked away, as she remembered riding the plains with her friend Naleesh. She leads the clan, I protect our family. Let us hope we are not as relax and off-guard as you say, Yosama.

Shinjo Yosama watched the young men practice, making ready to face the challenges of gempukku. One young man stopped for a moment, and came over to sit with Yosama. "Good morning, I am Moto Dolphi."

"Good morning, I am Shinjo Yosama."

"Do you have any advice for a young warrior?"

Shinjo Yosama rubbed his chin, "I have an idea, I would like for you to tell me your favorite story. Please, tell me of your most beloved hero, or ancestor."

The young man looked puzzled for a moment, but then nodded. "The tale of the Storyteller. She was one of the Elders that convinced Shinjo herself to adopt us into this great family. Martazera was a matron, and leader of the Ujik-Hai when her tribe was met by the Ki-Rin Clan. After she gained Shinjo's trust Martazera suggested that the Ki-Rin could learn much from the Ujik-Hai, and that there was also much for the Ujik-Hai, now called Moto to learn from the Ki-Rin. Martazera mainly taught desert survival skills, but also told some intricately woven tales of our past, our heritage. She spoke mostly in metaphors, because some of the stories were close to her heart. These were the stories of her life long battle with the Desert Hounds, the Raiders, that plagued our people. She eventually wins her battle, and gains dominance over the raiders, but at the cost of her five sons. They were tells of victory, and of loss. Martazera rode the Kurichitai when she felt the time had come. When Shinjo tried to follow her, she convinced Shinjo that the Kurichitai was something a person did alone. Shinjo was saddened to see her friend Martazera leave, but understood, and returned to the Ki-Rin Clan."

"Interesting choice of a hero Dolphi-san, " Yosama smiled, "I should like to hear more of these stories of our people. Look at what I have already learned from her. That one must continue on even in the face of great loss. There is a reason her story is dear to you, and it reveals something of your character. You alone know why you are drawn to her story above others. You do not have to tell me, just listen to the direction it is revealing to your spirit. This Martazera, I would say is one of your guiding ancestors."

"I am named after one of her five sons. My mother told me many of Martazera's Tales." Dolphi smiled, "Pleasure to meet you, Yosama-san."

"The pleasure was mutual, come speak with me again soon my friend, Dolphi-san." The two men bowed to each other, and Moto Dolphi returned to his practice. Yosama also got in some practice by giving instruction.

I began writing this after a dream I had last Monday night. Thus part inspired by the dream, part inspired by Nomad Chronicler encouraging me to focus on being positive a few weeks back. I hope you enjoy reading the story as much as I did writing it.

Enjoy it I did! I think it's great that you and others are writing this stuff on the forum. I hope to write some more of my own once I'm fully settled in my new city.
